Renovations (Installment #7)
From: Jim Lindner Date: June 21, 2010 |
The work on the stained glass of the large window is being done in place, meaning that for the most part the windows are not being removed. This does, however, require the restoration team to don hard hats and safety harnesses when on the scaffolding. Here is some work being done on the exterior front of the building.
The building is really quite tall - the top of the steeple is about 80 feet over the ground and it is hard to get a perspective of how big things really need to be in order to be the right proportion. Here is the steeple cap which was made out of copper before installation.
The idea of using the copper is for it to eventually over time develop a copper blue green patina that will be similar in color to the color of the building trim. We are trying to allow it to weather and develop this patina naturally over time - we will see how that goes, the speed and how the patina develops will very much depend on the specific environmental chemistry, so it is up to mother nature. When installed it was very coppery and shiny and it already has dulled which is a good sign. Here is the cap on the crane platform for it's ride up to the top.
And its final placement.
The Louvers have become a substantial part of the project. Earlier web pages have shown you the template for them. Now they are almost complete and are getting their final painting before installation. Like the steeple cap, these are really very large and it is hard to tell from the ground how really big they are.
After painting the Louvers were lifted into place by a crane. The opening had already been framed and measurements had been carefully coordinated with the mill to insure that the opening and the louvers angles were correct... and they were.

I had the opportunity for a quick visit to the site in June and took a few pictures while I was there.

That metal roof sure stands out in the distance.
