Historical Pictures

Does anyone have any old pictures of the church that you'd be willing to share here? If you do and can scan them and email to me, I'll be happy to post them with appropriate credit. Please provide as much information as you can about the names of persons pictured, approximate date if known, etc.

1902?

(Photo contributed by Deborah Wentzell)

Here's a great picture from a time before electricity arrived at the church. (Pat Mombourquette has the original of this picture and her mom or dad had written 1902 on the back ... she's not sure if they were certain of that ... however if correct then the minster in this picture would be Rev. Jacob Maurer. Here's a comparison photo - what do you think?)

How many differences do you see in this picture from the church you remember? Most obvious is the oil lamps in that grand chandelier (and the hanging lamp at the front). Can you imagine how it must have been to light those all lamps for an evening service? And today, we just flip a switch! How did they reach the lamps? The answer was in the attic - see this renovation page. That beautiful lower section with the lamps was removed when it was converted to electric lights. I believe this was a metal tank for the oil and if memory serves me I believe I remember seeing it down in the cellar at some time in the past.

As for the other differences, you'll notice that at that time there was a pump organ, the pulpit and lectern were on opposite sides of the platform, the old hymnboards were different, and the altar was different. The altar was replaced in 1934 and the old altar was later used in the Sunday School. I'm sure you spotted all of these. A little more difficult to see in the picture but if you look at the far right, there are some pews where the baptismal font was in later years. And if you look to the center ahead of the front pew, there is the original baptismal font. You can just see the bowl on the top. This font was replaced in 1947 with a newer one and the old one (missing the bowl) sat in the corner below the choir loft on the left. It is now at Grace Lutheran Church in Dartmouth (see here).

19?? Picnic

(Photo contributed by Pat Mombourquette)

The date of this picnic is unknown however the young boy at the bottom is Ralph Parks born in 1903 so you can estimate from that. The church would be just off picture to the left.

193? Picnic

(Photos contributed by Pat Mombourquette)

This is a church or Sunday School picnic on the proprety of Will Schmeisser (the church is behind the house at the right) but the date is not known.

(Left facing camera:) Stewart & Wallace Corkum

Other side - Connie behind Wallace?, Reggie & Myrtle Corkum (standing), Edna(?) & Theodore Corkum

(Note from Rod: Wallace was my father, Theodore and Edna were my grandparents, Stewart was an uncle, and Myrtle was an aunt. Judging by their ages I'm guessing that this was sometime in the 1930's.)

Believed to be the same picnic as the previous picture.

3 ladies back right - Annie (Charles) Walters, Muriel Walters, Tressie (Wilson) Walters

Minshall Electric Organ 1948 - 1987

This organ served the congregation well during the 39 years of use. There were a number of times it was necessary to have it repaired and it was getting more difficult to keep it going with the obsolete technology and unavailabity of parts. Eventually in 1987 it was replaced with a new Allen digital organ (picture here.)
